INGREDIENTS:

  • 3 cups milk
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • 3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/8 teaspoon chili powder (optional)
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground cayenne pepper (optional)
  • 3 ounces semi-sweet chocolate, chopped

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. In a medium saucepan, whisk together the milk, cocoa powder, sugar, cinnamon, vanilla extract, chili powder, and cayenne pepper (if using).
  2. Place the saucepan over medium heat and cook, stirring occasionally, until the mixture is hot and the chocolate has melted.
  3. Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 5 minutes, or until the chocolate is smooth and creamy.
  4. Pour the hot chocolate into mugs and serve immediately.

TIPS:

  • For a richer flavor, use whole milk or heavy cream.
  • If you don't have any unsweetened cocoa powder, you can use sweetened cocoa powder, but reduce the amount of sugar in the recipe.
  • To make a vegan version of this recipe, use plant-based milk and chocolate.
